Gold Loan vs Personal Loan - Which Wins for Rs. 2 to 5 Lakh in 2026
Gold loans and personal loans compete for the same borrower more than most people realise. This guide is written by someone who has priced both products on the lender side and can walk you through the exact trade-offs at the loan sizes where the choice actually matters. For loans between Rs. 2 lakh and Rs. 5 lakh, the answer in 2026 has shifted meaningfully from what it was three years ago.
The current rate landscape - who quotes what
Gold loan rates from banks currently run between 9 and 12 percent per annum. NBFC gold lenders (Muthoot, Manappuram, IIFL Gold) run between 12 and 22 percent depending on the loan-to-value ratio you accept and the tenure.
Personal loan rates for salaried customers with CIBIL above 750 currently run between 10.5 and 14 percent at banks, and 13 to 18 percent at NBFCs.
The overlap zone is real. A prime salaried customer can get a personal loan at 11 percent from HDFC Bank. The same customer can get a gold loan at 9.5 percent from SBI. On rate alone, the gold loan wins by 150 basis points. But rate is not the only variable, and often not the most important one.
Loan-to-value ratio and why it matters
Gold loans are secured against your physical gold jewellery or coins. Lenders sanction a percentage of the gold’s market value, not the full value. This is the loan-to-value ratio, or LTV.
RBI caps LTV on gold loans at 75 percent of the underlying gold value at the time of sanction. If you pledge Rs. 4 lakh worth of gold, the maximum loan you can take is Rs. 3 lakh. To borrow Rs. 5 lakh against gold, you must own gold worth at least Rs. 6.67 lakh.
At current gold prices, that translates to roughly 80 to 90 grams of 22-karat gold, or 90 to 100 grams of 18-karat gold. Most middle-income households in India do not have that quantity readily available to pledge. This is the first practical filter on who can even take a gold loan at these sizes.
The RBI expanded eligible collateral in April 2026 to include silver ornaments and coins, though bank policies on purity and form still vary. Silver loan LTV is typically lower than gold at 60 to 65 percent, and rates are 100 to 200 basis points higher due to price volatility. For a Rs. 3 lakh loan, this means pledging silver worth roughly Rs. 4.6 to Rs. 5 lakh. Silver as loan collateral is genuinely new in most banks, so ask directly at the branch rather than trusting the website, which is often outdated. Not every branch is equipped to value or store silver, especially in tier-2 and tier-3 locations.
The tenure difference nobody discusses
Personal loans typically run for 3 to 5 years. Gold loans typically run for 6 months to 3 years, with most lenders defaulting to a 12-month bullet or overdraft structure.
This matters for the monthly outflow. A Rs. 5 lakh personal loan at 12 percent over 5 years has an EMI of roughly Rs. 11,120. A Rs. 5 lakh gold loan at 9.5 percent over 1 year has an EMI of roughly Rs. 43,830 if you go the EMI route, or a bullet repayment of Rs. 5.47 lakh at the end of 12 months.
For borrowers with steady monthly income, the personal loan is more manageable. For borrowers expecting a lump sum receipt (property sale, bonus, insurance maturity, land settlement), the gold loan bullet structure is cheaper in absolute interest terms because the tenure is shorter.
Use the EMI calculator to compare both structures at the exact rates you are quoted, since the tenure difference makes headline-rate comparisons misleading.
The disbursement speed and paperwork asymmetry
Gold loans disburse in 30 to 60 minutes at any bank or NBFC branch that holds gold appraiser and vault infrastructure. The paperwork is a KYC form, a pledge agreement, and the physical handover of gold. No income proof, no CIBIL check for most gold loans below Rs. 5 lakh, no bank statement scrutiny.
Personal loans disburse in 24 to 72 hours for salaried customers with pre-approved offers, 3 to 7 working days for standard cases, and up to 15 days for self-employed borrowers or those with borderline credit. The paperwork covers salary slips or ITRs, bank statements, KYC, and a hard CIBIL pull.
For genuine emergencies (medical, education fee deadline, urgent business payment), the gold loan speed is often decisive regardless of rate. For planned borrowing, the personal loan tenure and non-collateral structure usually wins.
What happens if you cannot repay
This is the trade-off most borrowers underweight. On a personal loan default, the lender pursues recovery through legal notices, CIBIL reporting, and in extreme cases, civil suits. Your credit history takes a serious hit but no asset changes hands immediately.
On a gold loan default, the lender is legally entitled to auction your pledged gold after typically 30 to 60 days of notice. The auction proceeds are applied against the outstanding, and any surplus is refunded. But gold auctions rarely realise full market value. A borrower defaulting on a Rs. 3 lakh gold loan may lose gold worth Rs. 4.2 lakh at market rates, then receive only the surplus above the outstanding.
The emotional cost is often higher than the financial cost. Family gold that has been in a household for generations is not something most borrowers are prepared to part with. Factor this into the decision honestly.
Gold loan LTV is calculated on 22-karat purity. If your jewellery is 18-karat (typical for modern designs) or 14-karat (some diamond-set pieces), the appraised value is reduced proportionally. On a piece labelled Rs. 5 lakh at 18-karat purity, the effective 22-karat equivalent value is roughly Rs. 4.1 lakh, giving you a maximum loan of Rs. 3.07 lakh at 75 percent LTV. Ask for the karat-adjusted valuation before signing anything. Some NBFCs quote sanction amounts based on assumed 22-karat purity and then reduce at appraisal, which surprises borrowers at the last minute.
The clean decision framework
For Rs. 2 lakh to Rs. 5 lakh in 2026, use this three-question filter. Do you have enough gold to pledge without emotional or family cost? Do you expect a lump sum receipt within 12 months that can close the loan? Is the borrowing purpose short-term (working capital, medical, education fee)? If all three are yes, a gold loan usually wins on cost.
If any one is no, the personal loan is generally the safer choice. Rate difference of 150 to 200 basis points is meaningful but not decisive when weighed against tenure flexibility and asset security. Our detailed personal loan guide for 2026 covers what to expect from the personal loan route in current market conditions.
Run the numbers on both before deciding. Not the numbers the branch shows you. The numbers you calculate yourself.
